Gli scacchi a Catania dal 900 ai nostri giorni. giovedì 15 febbraio 2007 Estremamente frammentarie e lacunose sono le notizie dell'attività scacchistica catanese del primo ventennio del Novecento. È possibile ipotizzare un periodo critico per lo scacchismo cittadino da imputare da un lato alla crisi generale che investì l'Unione Scacchistica Italiana due anni dopo la sua costituzione (crisi riflessa dalla "lettera aperta" indirizzata ai signori presidenti di sezione dell'Unione Scacchistica Italiana a firma di Edoardo Crespi), dall'altro al fatto che nel giugno del 1899 era venuto a mancare improvvisamente Angelo Ardizzone, anima del Circolo Scacchistico Catanese, e che il presidente Giuseppe Alessi fu assorbito da occupazioni legate alla sua professione (Tuonava Crespi: "E voi, signori presidenti delle sezioni di Catania e di Palermo, perché da così gran tempo non date più alcun segno di vita?"). Tra il 1914 e il 1915 si evidenziò in ambito locale come abile giocatore di scacchi il settenne Ettore Majorana. Talento precocissimo, a 7 anni giocava così bene che il fatto ebbe risonanza nella cronaca cittadina. Tale passione lo accompagnò lungo il corso della sua vita. In una lettera (22 febbraio 1933) indirizzata alla madre Ettore dice: "[Heisenberg ed io] siamo diventati abbastanza amici e in seguito a molte discussioni e ad alcune partite a scacchi." Dopo la prima guerra mondiale, nel 1921, il Circolo venne ricostruito ad opera dell'ing. Ignazio Clementi Landolina, uomo di antico stampo, mecenate per eccellenza degli scacchi, presso il Circolo Artistico, di cui la sede più prestigiosa fu quella di piazza S. Nicolella. Molti luoghi occasionali di gioco e di ritrovo tra scacchisti divennero alcuni Caffè cittadini siti lungo la via Etnea: il Caffè Fiorito e il Caffè Lo Po. Un evento di straordinaria importanza nella storia scacchistica di Catania fu la simultanea tenuta dal campione russo Evfim Dmitrjevic Bogoljubov il 12 aprile 1933 nella sede del Circolo Artistico. Presenziarono alla simultanea venti appassionati scacchisti, ma solamente undici fronteggiarono Bogoljubov che chiuse con il risultato di + 8 =2 -1. In base a notizie tramandate oralmente pattarono il rag. Ignazio Maci e il prof Arcangelo Blandini; non è purtroppo noto il nome dello scacchista che riuscì a vincere il campione russo. Fra i giocatori di spicco tra gli Anni Venti e gli Anni Cinquanta possiamo ricordare: l'ing. Ugo Calà, che si classificò secondo a torneo regionale di Palermo, 1924, alle spalle del palermitano Giuseppe Cancelliere; Giovanni Chiaia, che ricoprì l'incarico di direttore della sezione toponomastica di Catania; Armando La Rosa, che partecipò nel 1931 al V Torneo "Edoardo Crespi"; Giovanni Stagno; Luca Zambonelli; Alfio Anastasi; Sebastiano Compagnini; Michele Casaburi (abile orefice recentemente scomparso); Ugo Asmundo; Giuseppe La Duca (problemista che compose soprattutto problemi in tre e più mosse e fu vincitore di due primi premi); il magistrato Santi Pirrone, che nel 1948 a Firenze partecipò alla finale del 12°Campionato Italiano; l'ing. Pasquale Privitera (reputato il più forte giocatore del tempo). Nel 1957 il torneo cittadino decretava i due astri nascenti: Alfio Scuderi e il giovanissimo Fabio Finocchiaro che al 1° Festival Scacchistico Partenopeo tenne testa al maestro internazionale Giorgio Porreca. Dopo un certo periodo di stasi, nel 1964, il Circolo Catanese assumendo la denominazione di Circolo Scacchistico "Paolo Boi", a memoria dell'insigne giocatore siracusano del XVI secolo, si ricostituiva presso la Casa della Cultura per iniziativa dell'ing. Pasquale Corsaro, che fu eletto, a coro unanime presidente. Due anni dopo si effettuava un nuovo cambiamento di sede; rinasceva la sezione scacchistica presso il Circolo dei Dipendenti Comunali sito in via Vittorio Emanuele. Un avvenimento importante rappresentò, nel gennaio del 1969, la simultanea contro 27 giocatori convenuti da ogni parte della Sicilia tenuta nella suddetta sede dal grande maestro Mato Damjanovic. Riuscirono a vincere il dott. Enrico Cannavò di Acireale e l'ing. Florenzo Vitalini. Dopo la chiusura del CRAL, nel 1974 l'attività scacchistica locale continuò con la fondazione della Sezione Scacchistica Y.M.C.A. nella sede di via Umberto. Si distinsero in questo periodo valenti giocatori quali Fabio Finocchiaro, il prof Paolo Marletta, il dott. Dino Dini, l'ing. Fabio Michelotti, Alfio Pizzicaro, il dott. Alfio Scuderi. Nel 1976 una manifestazione di grande rilievo per la diffusione del gioco a Catania fu la simultanea tenuta da Giorgio Porreca nel meraviglioso scenario di Villa Bellini. Nel 1978 dalla scissione dell'Accademia Scacchi Y.M.C.A. sorgeva il Circolo Scacchi Etna, sito in via Caronda e successivamente trasferito in via Coppola. L'ing. Pasquale Corsaro, presidente della nuova associazione, diede grande impulso all'attività scacchistica catanese grazie alle sue numerose e valide iniziative; infatti nel corso dell'anno riuscì a organizzare per la prima volta due tornei nazionali, mentre contemporaneamente avviava la proposta di formazione di una Lega Regionale e conduceva una trasmissione televisiva di informazione e tecnica scacchistica presso "Telecolor", una emittente privata cittadina. Nel marzo-aprile del 1979, Corsaro iniziava una rubrica scacchistica con cadenza settimanale sul quotidiano "il Diario". Nel 1981 sulle ceneri del Circolo Scacchi Etna sorgeva per iniziativa del dott. Alberto Zappalà, di Salvino Cannella e del geometra Ivan De Marco, il Circolo Club Trinacria sito in via Enna. Gli scacchisti emergenti di questo periodo furono Giuseppe Fabiano, che poi divenne il primo maestro a tavolino della città, Fabrizio Bonaccorsi, Alfio Leonardi (si laureò qualche anno dopo in Ingegneria), l'ing. Sergio Tuttobene, Giuseppe Toscano, Santo Spina. Il 25 gennaio 1981 l'associazione si trasferiva, per opera di Salvatore Avola in collaborazione con l'Opera Universitaria, nei locali più ampi di via Calatabiano ed assumeva la denominazione di Circolo Scacchistico Universitario. Venuto meno il suddetto circolo per varie cause, nella primavera del 1983 iniziava il riflusso degli scacchisti presso la Sezione Scacchi YMC.A. Purtroppo l'anno successivo anche questa sezione fu costretta a chiudere i battenti. La crisi catanese veniva dunque superata efficacemente dal geom. Vincenzo Campisano: infatti grazie al suo interessamento e per la disponibilità del sig. Rannisi veniva creata una Sezione Scacchistica nel Dopolavoro Postelegrafonico sito in Piazzale Asia. Venuta meno anche questa sezione, dalle ceneri risorse la fenice: il 9 aprile 1989 nacque l'Accademia Scacchistica "11 Gelso Bianco" il cui presidente, Bruno Intravaia, gestore dell'omonimo complesso alberghiero, pianificava, coadiuvato dall'attivo Ivan De Marco, il rilancio dello scacchismo catanese a livello nazionale. L'organizzazione del l° Festival Internazionale "Città di Catania" (1-8 agosto) richiamò infatti appassionati da ogni parte d'Italia e dall'estero. Si trattò di un grande successo che inserì a pieno titolo Catania nel circuito delle manifestazioni nazionali e internazionali, come dimostra l'albo d'oro della serie magistrale in tutte le edizioni del torneo: 1989 Igor Efimov (ex URSS), 1990 Gerardo Barbero (Argentina), 1991 Gojko Laketic (Iugoslavia), 1993 Carlos Garcia Palermo (Italia), 1994 e 1995 Gyula Sax (Ungheria). Nel gioco per corrispondenza bisogna sottolineare la duplice vittoria conseguita nel 27° e 29° Campionato italiano assoluto dal maestro internazionale Fabio Finocchiaro, attualmente finalista del campionato del mondo; il prestigioso titolo di campione d'Italia conquistato dal Catania Scacchi (Gaetano Quattrocchi, Santo Spina, Giorgio Luigi Grasso, Carmelo Coco) nel 6° campionato a squadre; le vittorie consecutive del maestro Giuseppe Toscano nei tornei WT/M/GT/ 322 e 323; il titolo di campione d'Europa (EU/FSM/47) conquistato dal maestro Alfio Scuderi.
