GLI SCACCHI COME MODELLO
 

 

Se nel precedente articolo abbiamo visto gli scacchi come rappresentazione del mondo inteso quale cosmo ordinato, seguendo l’opinione di coloro che ritengono l’ordine essere la caratteristica essenziale del mondo reale, contrapposta al caos primigenio, ora vedremo invece come gli scacchi possano essere intesi ancora come rappresentazione del mondo ma non tanto in senso fisico quanto in senso logico. Questo “universo logico” sta all’universo esistente così come la categoria della possibilità sta a quella della realtà. Per chiarire questo rapporto possiamo partire dalla considerazione che i fatti del mondo quale lo conosciamo potrebbero benissimo essere diversi da quello che sono, che le stesse “leggi di natura” potrebbero benissimo non esserci, o potrebbero esservene altre. Infatti è chiaramente immaginabile un mondo in cui, per esempio, gli asini volino, o si possa passare attraverso i muri, ecc. Ora, tutto ciò che è immaginabile, o comunque concepibile, è logicamente possibile, anche se di fatto è impossibile. Non è però concepibile, ad esempio, un mondo in cui esistano dei quadrati rotondi: sarebbe un’ipotesi impraticabile e perciò logicamente impossibile. Si può dunque affermare che il limite dell’universo logico, di ciò che è logicamente possibile, è un limite di pensabilità. Concepire gli scacchi come rappresentazione di tale universo logico equivale allora, in un certo senso, a concepirli come rappresentazione del nostro stesso modo di pensare. Si potrebbe obiettare che c’è una differenza fondamentale fra le regole del pensiero scoperte dalla logica e le regole del gioco degli scacchi: queste ultime sono arbitrarie mentre le prime ci sembrano assolute. Anche se c’è una parte di verità in tale obiezione (che comunque non colpirebbe il carattere rappresentativo del gioco), le cose non paiono oggi così chiare come un paio di secoli fa; la stessa logica, infatti, ha subito un processo di assiomatizzazione come la matematica, e viene solitamente presentata in modo rigorosamente simbolico-deduttivo, a partire da definizioni, assiomi, regole di inferenza . Ora, gli assiomi di un calcolo logico, sebbene non siano scelti a caso, sono in linea di principio arbitrari come le regole degli scacchi. Esistono di conseguenza diverse logiche così come esistono diversi giochi di scacchiera (dama, scacchi, xiang-qi, etc.). Requisito essenziale di un calcolo logico così come degli scacchi, intesi qui come modello di calcolo logico , è comunque quello della coerenza, cioè della non contraddittorietà. Evidentemente, per quanto riguarda gli scacchi, la non contraddittorietà è garantita dal fatto che non vi sono regole fra loro incompatibili. Un caso di contraddizione lo si potrebbe rilevare, curiosamente, in occasione dello scacco matto: secondo le regole del gioco infatti è obbligatorio parare lo scacco eseguendo certe mosse ed è allo stesso tempo vietato farlo; ci troviamo cioè di fronte a qualcosa di contemporaneamente necessario ed impossibile. Non stupisce perciò che a questo punto il gioco abbia termine; e non è casuale che le mosse illegali non vengano punite ma ritirate: consentirle, sia pure prevedendo una penale, equivarrebbe infatti a distruggere la natura logica del gioco. A questo punto si può evidenziare l’aspetto più interessante di questo approccio. Il filosofo e matematico tedesco G.W. Leibniz aveva introdotto già tre secoli fa la distinzione fra verità di ragione e verità di fatto. Le prime sono le verità necessarie, quelle cioè il cui contrario implica contraddizione; tutte le verità logico-matematiche sono di questo tipo poiché, indipendentemente da come vada il mondo, hanno valore. Le verità di fatto invece sono contingenti, poiché il loro contrario non implica contraddizione: è un fatto che le cose stiano come stanno, ma avrebbero potuto benissimo non stare così. Ora, negli scacchi questa distinzione corrisponde a quella fra le definizioni del significato dei pezzi e le regole del gioco da un lato e la descrizione delle partite effettivamente giocate dall’altro. Definizioni e regole sono sempre “vere”, indipendentemente da quali mosse vengano di fatto eseguite; si può anche dire, tornando al caso delle mosse illegali, che una partita in cui siano presenti mosse illegali non è affatto una partita a scacchi ma qualcosa per noi affatto incomprensibile, così come un mondo che contenga dei quadrati rotondi (per riprendere l’esempio di apertura). Nell’ambito della “legalità” è però possibile giocare un numero immenso (per quanto finito) di partite, e nell’ambito di ogni partita è vero che certe mosse sono state giocate, ma è solo contingentemente vero: avrebbero benissimo potuto non essere giocate, nel qual caso ci saremmo trovati di fronte ad un’altra partita possibile che però di fatto non è stata giocata. Gli scacchi si prestano perciò molto bene a chiarire la distinzione leibniziana fra mondo attuale e mondi possibili : ogni partita possibile, rispetto all’universo logico degli scacchi, è come un intero mondo possibile, ed il mondo attuale (quello in cui ci troviamo) è di volta in volta rappresentato dalla partita che stiamo giocando ; esso è la realizzazione di una delle successioni logicamente possibili di eventi così come la nostra partita è la realizzazione di una delle successioni logicamente possibili di mosse. Si può anche dire che tutte le partite possibili sono lì, nello spazio logico, fuori dal tempo, che aspettano di essere giocate, e che noi, giocandole (svolgendole, cioè, nel tempo) le facciamo passare dalla potenza all’atto di esistere (per usare un linguaggio aristotelico-tomista), così come Dio, nella concezione di Leibniz, dà l’esistenza al mondo “scegliendolo” fra gli infiniti mondi possibili. Questa immagine può essere almeno in parte in grado di spiegare anche il fascino che molti giocatori provano di fronte alla scacchiera: essi hanno l’impressione di partecipare ad una vera e propria creazione. E’ da notare a questo proposito che l’aspetto agonistico del gioco passa qui assolutamente in secondo piano, anzi risulta addirittura un ostacolo; si narra che il grande Aleckine fosse indisposto dal fatto che i suoi avversari spesso non giocavano le mosse migliori, impedendogli così di realizzare le combinazioni più belle . Evidentemente qui c’è un atteggiamento di tipo estetico-metafisico: non si ricerca tanto la vittoria quanto la realizzazione della partita più bella, quella che, come il migliore dei mondi possibili di Leibniz, contenga il massimo di perfezione (Naturalmente, anche se ci si può “sentire Dio” giocando una partita “immortale”, la miglior partita possibile potrebbe giocarla solo Dio contro se stesso). Tutte queste considerazioni ci aiutano a capire perché il gioco degli scacchi abbia affascinato tutti coloro che si sono sforzati di attribuire al mondo una struttura logica. Essi hanno più o meno inconsciamente interpretato il mondo a partire dal gioco degli scacchi. Ciò è assai più dell’uso della metafora scacchistica in particolari ambiti, per esempio in quello politico dove si parla dello “scacchiere mediorientale” o di una “abile mossa diplomatica” di questo o quel governo: essi hanno pensato ogni evento come se fosse paragonabile ad una mossa del gioco. Se gli scacchi come insieme consistente di regole ci si erano mostrati come modello di calcolo logico, gli scacchi come insieme di tutte le successioni logicamente possibili di mosse ci si sono mostrati come modello di tutti i mondi possibili, e perciò anche del nostro: essi consentono perciò di gettare un ponte fra Pensiero e Mondo. Per quanto il mondo sia assai più complesso di una partita a scacchi, anche solo per la quantità enorme di enti (cose) che vi “entrano in gioco” rispetto all’esiguo numero dei pezzi degli scacchi (trentadue, di soli sei tipi), l’intreccio delle connessioni fra questi pezzi è almeno tale da rendere l’idea di quella complessità e soprattutto da suggerire un’altra idea: che la stessa complessità del mondo (della vita) non sia un groviglio per principio inestricabile ma sia in realtà una complicazione di fenomeni semplici, così come una configurazione complessa sulla scacchiera è riducibile alla posizione dei singoli pezzi (anche se, evidentemente, solo una mente divina, che cogliesse tutte le connessioni, potrebbe avere la percezione chiara di tale semplicità di fondo del tutto). Un atteggiamento del genere è particolarmente evidente nel Tractatus logico-philosophicus (1921) dell’austriaco L. Wittgenstein , principale espressione di quella particolare metafisica che fu l’atomismo logico . L’idea guida del Tractatus è proprio quella che il mondo, dietro l’apparente caoticità, sia dominato da una razionalità statica, ben rappresentata dall’immagine del quadrato , simbolo che richiama idee di uguaglianza, simmetria, immobilità, semplicità. A differenza che nella concezione dialettica, di cui al mio precedente articolo, la varietà e il contrasto sono esclusi dal mondo, così come i colori sono esclusi dalla scacchiera, i cui quadrati sono ora bianchi, ora neri, accostati più che contrapposti, non mescolati, semplici e privi di ombre così come si vorrebbe l’intera realtà; la stessa scacchiera non è che una complicazione di quadrati, un “quadrato di quadrati”. E’ da sottolineare che non c’è più l’opposizione fra Bianco e Nero che c’era nella concezione dialettica, anche perché la dimensione etica (Bene-Male) è ora esclusa dal mondo (ed abbiamo già visto come il carattere agonistico degli scacchi sia qui inessenziale). Bianco e Nero sono qui più facilmente associabili a Vero e Falso, i possibili valori di verità delle proposizioni: come ogni casa della scacchiera è o bianca o nera, così ogni proposizione sensata sul mondo è o vera o falsa, in quanto riducibile in ultima analisi a una o più proposizioni su fatti atomici che o sussistono o non sussistono , senza alcuna ambiguità. Viene qui spontaneo il riferimento al grande sviluppo che l’informatica ha avuto in campo scacchistico: la logica binaria su cui essa è costruita consente di ridurre un fenomeno complesso ad una successione di unità informative semplici; una serie di 0 e di 1 equivale ad una serie di V(vero) e di F(falso). Non stupisce quindi che l’informatica abbia trovato proprio negli scacchi un campo di applicazione ideale, in quanto essi consentono per definizione questa analisi riduzionistica. Si può concludere allora che l’informatico e lo scacchista, nelle loro rispettive attività, sono entrambi sotto il “fascino del quadrato”, mentre “vedere il mondo” sotto la forma del quadrato è l’esasperazione filosofica di tale atteggiamento.
